Aloha SMU!

By Natalie Sharp

Mele Kalikimaka means Merry Christmas in Hawaiian! Yesterday, President Turner greeted anxious SMU football fans, alumni, students, student athletes, members from the community, media and the like, with what he called “the worst kept secret in Dallas.” The “secret” announcement that was made at the press conference yesterday in the Hughes Trigg Student Center was that SMU has accepted Hawaii’s invitation to the Sheraton Bowl. This means that our SMU football team will be competing in their first bowl game since 1984!!! After SMU was given the death penalty years ago, everyone seemed to think that SMU football was cursed. Last year our football program was 1 and 11. This year, we are 7 and 5. June Jones, our head football coach, has been with SMU for a little over fifteen months now and has obviously done a tremendous job of turning our football program around. This big accomplishment is such a wonderful experience for all members of the SMU community. A lot of people have been waiting for this day to finally come and by golly, it is here! What an exciting time it is to be a part or become a part of SMU! I am proud to be an SMU Mustang! SMU will compete in the bowl game on Christmas Eve and it will be played in Honolulu. Now, how to say good luck in Hawaiian…Maika’I pomaika’i!

Here is a picture of my Mom and I on the field during Saturday’s game against Tulane!
