This past weekend was parent’s weekend on campus, which is always exciting. This year was different though; there was an extra energy in the air. That may have been because the SMU football team was one win away from clinching a bowl birth for the first time in about 25 years. We had a great shot to win on Saturday versus UTEP, a conference opponent. There was no better time for the Mustangs to wrap up a bowl birth then on family weekend at Ford Stadium. The game was back and forth the whole time, a great game to watch. The Mustangs scored on a long pass from Padron to Sanders with about 4 minutes left in the game, putting us up by 4, 35-31. UTEP drove the ball down inside our 20 with 30 seconds on the clock, needing a touchdown to win. We were one down away from winning our 6th game of the season (5 more than all last year). On 4th down, Thompson sacked their quarterback and the Mustangs won. The celebration began with the fans in the stands and continued with the fans rushing the field to celebrate with the team. What an exciting day! The Mustangs are bowl eligble!
We also learned on Saturday that Houston (who was leading the conference) had lost. This meant that SMU was now leading Conference USA and needing to win their last two games against Marshall and Tulane to clinch a spot in the Conference USA championship game.
It has been an exciting season so far and much improved from last year. Football is finally back on the hilltop at SMU, thanks to June Jones and the hard work of all the coaches and players. The future looks bright for the Mustangs.
