I have white spots on my neck and chest and was told years ago it was a fungus in the athletes' foot family. Selsum shampoo really doesn't help, would using an athletes' foot cream help or is there anything over the counter I could use?

You may want to talk to your healthcare provider to see if there are other alternatives or prescriptions that would be beneficial. 2% selenium sulfide shampoo is a treatment for tinnea versicolor. In addition, there are some prescription medications that may be helpful. You can also call our Nurse Advice Line (214-768-3194) for more detailed information.

How do I tell the difference between the flu and a cold?

It can sometimes be difficult to differentiate between the flu and a cold as they are both respiratory illnesses. In general, the flu is worse than the common cold, and symptoms such as fever, body aches, extreme tiredness, and dry cough are more common and more intense. Check out this chart for common symptoms: http://www.fda.gov/fdac/features/896_flu.html#chart

I have read and heard that HPV will go away if the immune system is strong enough to fight it off. Is this true?

Yes, the body's immune system will eventually clear the virus. The healthier non-smoking patients typically clear the virus more readily than one who smokes or has a chronic disease. (There is a direct correlation between tobacco use and HPV progression.) It is impossible to predict how long the virus will be present in an otherwise healthy patient, but usually the virus is cleared by a healthy immune system within 2 years.
