Dallas Mavericks to hold 2008 training camp on campus

Crum Basketball CenterThe Dallas Mavericks have announced the details of their 2008 training camp, which will be held on the Hilltop. The Mavs will kick off training camp with their annual Media Day at 3 p.m. Sept. 29 at American Airlines Center.

The team will practice at SMU daily beginning at 9:30 a.m. Sept. 30. All practice sessions will be held in the Crum Basketball Center.

“We are excited to hold this year’s training camp at one of the nation’s best collegiate athletic facilities,” President of Basketball Operations/General Manager Donnie Nelson said. “We look forward to working with Steve Orsini, Matt Doherty and the rest of our friends at SMU. Over the last few years, President (R. Gerald) Turner has developed a world-class facility that is nothing short of extraordinary, and the Mavericks are proud to hold our camp there.”

SMU Basketball Coach Matt DohertyThe men’s soccer team jumped several places in two national polls after defeating Old Dominion and Virginia to win the University of Virginia Classic over Labor Day weekend. The Mustangs jump from No. 17 to No. 7 in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America poll and from No. 12 to No. 6 in the poll. The team’s next stop is the Cal Legacy Classic at UC-Berkeley Sept. 5-7. Read more.

Senior sociology major DeMyron Martin has been named a candidate for the 2008 Doak Walker Award, presented annually to the nation’s top college running back. This is Martin’s second consecutive nomination for the honor – the only major collegiate award that requires all candidates to be in good academic standing and on schedule to graduate within one year of other students of the same classification. Men’s Basketball Coach Matt Doherty (left) will be a guest coach in the inaugural Chairmen of the Boards Charity Basketball Tournament Sept. 7 at Hunter College, New York City. The 3-on-3 round-robin will benefit Tuesday’s Children, a nonprofit organization serving the needs of 9/11 families and rescue and recovery workers. Read more.

Men’s Basketball Coach Matt Doherty will appear in the opening-week broadcast of ABC’s “Road to March Madness,” which airs at 2 p.m. CT Feb. 2. Doherty will appear in the network’s New York studio with Bonnie Bernstein and Tom Brennan. Part of the feature was also shot on campus inside Moody Coliseum and during practice at the new Crum Basketball Center. The show will air each Saturday before ABC’s coverage of NCAA basketball. Fox Broadcasting’s “So You Think You Can Dance” held its first round of auditions in SMU’s McFarlin Auditorium Jan. 17-19, 2008. More than 400 contestants lined up at 5 a.m. for their chance to strut their stuff in front of Judges Nigel Lythgoe, Mary Murphy and Adam Shankman, and show host Cat Deeley. You’ll have to wait until later this spring to see who made the cut for the show’s fourth season, but in the meantime check out this slideshow. photo
