Five honored with 2015 Faculty Senate Outstanding Staff Awards

The SMU Faculty Senate honored five staff members for exceptional performance with its 2015 Faculty Senate Outstanding Staff Awards. The honors were presented during the Senate’s last meeting of the 2014-15 academic year on Wednesday, May 6.

This year’s winners:

  • Dee Darwin, Theatre, Meadows School of the Arts
  • Kate Livingston, Extended Learning/SMU-in-Plano
  • Jordan Morrison, Education Policy and Leadership, Annette Caldwell Simmons School of Education and Human Development
  • Dan Sly, Café 100, Hughes-Trigg Student Center

In addition to award trophies, each honoree received a tote bag containing gifts ranging from season tickets to museum memberships, donated by SMU Athletics, the SMU Bookstore, SMU Dining Services, Meadows Museum and the Meadows Division of Theatre.

SMU MayTerm 2015 enrollment underway for main-campus classes that start May 14

SMU’s MayTerm 2015 will offer nearly 50 courses during the interterm period scheduled for May 14-29. Enrollment is now open through my.SMU.edu. The priority enrollment deadline for classes on the Dallas campus is Friday, April 24; enrollments after this date will still be accepted for classes with seats available.

MayTerm offerings consist of full SMU courses adapted to 11 class days of 4 hours each. All classes are taught by regular SMU faculty members and adjunct professors. In addition, they offer the same discounted tuition as all other non-Fall and Spring terms. With no general student fees attached, these classes cost about 33 percent less than a regular-term course.

There are 49 May Term courses scheduled for 2015, up from 27 last year — an increase that is “significant,” says Kate Livingston, executive director of SMU Extended Learning.

“It shows that faculty are embracing the program,” Livingston adds. “The diversity of the course offerings is strong as well.”

Students are benefiting from the MayTerm for many reasons, including the opportunity to improve their academic standing, fulfill University Curriculum requirements, work toward an additional major or minor, complete prerequisites for other courses, or take a class with a distinguished professor that may be outside their degree plan. More than 325 students had registered for MayTerm 2015 courses during the first three days of enrollment.

“I really enjoyed the condensed format of the class. I found it was easier to retain information…. Overall, my MayTerm course was a great experience,” reads one student’s course evaluation. “My professor made coming to class for four hours every day enjoyable; she managed to present an incredible amount of material while still making it fun and giving us time for discussion,” wrote another MayTerm student.

Any SMU student in good standing is eligible to enroll in a MayTerm course. Students may take only one MayTerm course at a time and should meet with their academic adviser before enrolling for any MayTerm course.

On-campus housing in Morrison-McGinnis Residential Commons will be available for MayTerm students who are living in assigned SMU residence halls during Spring 2015. Students must sign up for MayTerm Housing by Friday, May 1. Room rent is $335 for double occupancy; a limited number of private rooms are available for $385. MayTerm housing closes at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 30, 2015.

All MayTerm residents are required to purchase a $175 all-flex meal plan. Flex Dollars may be used at dining locations around campus, including Café 100, Chick-fil-A, Subway, The Market, and Einstein Brothers.

SMU J Term 2013 now accepting course proposals

SMU J Term logoSMU’s popular J Term program based at SMU-in-Plano is now accepting course proposals for its January 2013 session. The deadline for submissions is Wednesday, Sept. 19, 2012.

J Term instruction is done on an off-load basis and in addition to normal teaching loads for the fall and spring terms. Deans and department chairs must sign course proposal forms and confirm the amount of extra compensation, as stated in an e-mail from SMU Provost Paul Ludden sent Wednesday, Aug. 29, 2012.

Established in 2010, the J Term (short for January Term) allows students to complete one three-credit-hour course at a discounted tuition rate before the start of the spring semester. In January 2012, the program served 200 students with 34 course offerings from the Cox School of Business, Dedman College of Humanities and Sciences, Lyle School of Engineering and Meadows School of the Arts.

Livingston, Rutigliano take new Extended Learning responsibilities

Kate Livingston, campus director of SMU-in-Plano, has accepted a position as SMU’s Executive Director of Extended Learning. She begins her new responsibilities June 1, 2012.

In addition to her roles as director of the Plano campus and of the J-Term Program, Livingston will oversee SMU Continuing and Professional Education (CAPE) at both the Plano and main campuses.

Livingston’s experience includes previous roles as associate dean for executive education and community outreach at the University of New Mexico’s Anderson School of Management; as assistant dean for marketing and strategic planning at the University of Miami’s School of Continuing Studies; and as assistant dean and director of professional and continuing education at the University of New Orleans’ Metropolitan College.

Working with Dean David Chard, Livingston has begun the administrative transition of CAPE from the Annette Caldwell Simmons School of Education and Human Development to the Provost’s Office, according to an e-mail announcement by SMU Provost Paul Ludden.

The Master of Liberal Studies degree program will remain with the Simmons School, and several existing noncredit programs will remain in Cox School of Business, Lyle School of Engineering and Perkins School of Theology.

Kimberly Rutigliano has taken the position of director of the CAPE Program. She has served as director at Bright Horizons Family Solutions-Plano and as program manager of Avance-Dallas. She also served as Assistant Area Coordinator of Student Development at Texas Tech University.

An SMU alumna, Rutigliano has a B.A. degree with departmental distinction as a double major in psychology and Spanish with minors in history and Latin American studies. As a student, she served as an R.A. and Learning Enhancement Assistant in the Altshuler Learning Enhancement Center. She also holds a dual M.B.A. from Texas Tech University and Universidad Anáhuac in Mexico City.

J Term 2011 deadline extended to Dec. 10

Now in its second year, the concentrated program of study, set for Jan. 4-13 at the SMU-in-Plano campus, allows students to complete one three-credit-hour course at a discounted tuition rate before the start of the spring semester.

The enrollment deadline has been extended to Friday, Dec. 10, for the 18 courses with seats available. They feature offerings from the Cox School of Business, Dedman College of Humanities and Sciences, Lyle School of Engineering, Meadows School of the Arts and the Annette Caldwell Simmons School of Education and Human Development. Courses include “Management Concepts” for business minors and non-business majors, “Career Development Theory and Practice,” “Mass Media and Technology” and “Crime and Delinquency.”

“J Term allows students to pursue a very focused learning opportunity with SMU faculty members and adjunct professors,” says Kate Livingston, SMU-in-Plano campus director and director of the J-Term program. “These credit hours can help students accelerate their degree completion, earn a second major or minor, fulfill general education requirements or prerequisites, or just take a course of interest.”

J-Term courses are not available for registration through Access.SMU. To enroll, students should meet with an adviser to select appropriate courses and to complete the J-Term application form. The application must be received in Enrollment Services, faxed to 972-473-3433 or emailed to jterm@smu.edu by 4 p.m. Dec. 10.
