As of Sept. 30, faculty and staff have made 960 gifts in fiscal year 2010-11 to support The Second Century Campaign. Each area’s percentage of progress to its goal as of that date is listed below:

A fall carnival, complete with food and games, will kick off the second year of SMU’s faculty and staff funding drive supporting The Second Century Campaign. It will take place 3-5 p.m. Sept. 22 in the newly renovated (and renamed) Martha Proctor Mack Grand Ballroom, Umphrey Lee Center.

Faculty and staff members may RSVP online at the Second Century Campaign website.

The faculty and staff component of the University’s Second Century Campaign achieved total participation of 65 percent during the 2009-10 fiscal year, against a goal of 25 percent annual participation and 50 percent participation over the campaign’s life. This year’s objective is for each of the University’s 15 areas to exceed last year’s participation rate. The deans, vice presidents and the athletic director have set goals for their respective units that reflect their results from this past year.

The new year will also see a new faculty co-chair for the campaign. Marc Christensen, professor of electrical engineering in the Lyle School of Engineering, replaces Harold Stanley, who has joined the University administration as associate provost.

There will be a campuswide contest to reach the established participation goals. The competition takes place among all seven schools plus Athletics; Business and Finance; Central University Libraries; Development and External Affairs; Office of the President; Provost/Academic Affairs; Legal Affairs; and Student Affairs. The school and the unit that are closest to their participation goals as of Sept. 22 will be announced at the kick-off event.

All faculty and staff members are encouraged to make a gift before the event or to bring their pledge cards to the carnival.

“In talking to alumni, the Board of Trustees and others we hope will support the campaign, to be able to say that 65 percent of faculty and staff members had contributed really went a long way. I thank you for that,” said SMU President R. Gerald Turner at a faculty and staff donor reception Aug 25. “It is a statement of how much we who work here believe in this University, and that’s a powerful message.

“SMU has been blessed with a total of $400,000 that faculty and staff gave last year. That money works in many ways, throughout the University,” Turner added. “Thank you for being the first to be involved, and for being leaders in your areas. We do appreciate it.”

The Second Century Campaign officially launched Sept. 12, 2008, with the goal of raising $750 million by 2015 to support student quality, faculty and academic excellence and the campus experience.
