SMU Honors Day 2013 is Monday, April 15

SMU celebrates the high achievements of students, faculty and staff members with two ceremonies that take place every third Monday of April. This year’s Honors Day Convocation and Awards Extravaganza take place on the afternoon and evening of Monday, April 15, 2013.

2013 Honors Day Convocation award recipients

Paige Ware, associate professor of teaching and learning in SMU’s Annette Caldwell Simmons School of Education and Human Development, will deliver the address during the 16th Honors Day Convocation at 5:30 p.m. in McFarlin Auditorium. The ceremony celebrates academic achievement at the University and department levels. Ware, a Ford Research Fellow, is an expert on the use of multimedia technologies for fostering language and literacy growth among adolescents, as well as on the use of internet-based communication for promoting intercultural awareness.

Retired and current faculty will assemble for Honors Day Convocation in academic dress no later than 5:10 p.m. in the Perkins Administration Building lobby and will process together to McFarlin Auditorium. A reception will immediately follow the ceremony in the Dallas Hall Quadrangle.

Later, the University presents several awards for excellence – including its highest honor, the “M” Award – during the 2013 Awards Extravaganza at 7:30 p.m. in the Hughes-Trigg Student Center Ballrooms. Awards Extravaganza honorees will be listed in SMU Forum the day after the ceremony.

SMU honors outstanding achievement at 2011-12 Extravaganza

2011 laurelsSMU faculty, staff, administrators and students were recognized with teaching awards, service honors and the University’s highest commendation, the “M” Award, at the 2012 Awards Extravaganza Monday, April 16.

On the same day, the University honored its best students at the 15th annual Honors Day Convocation. The address was delivered by Jodi Cooley, assistant professor of experimental particle physics in SMU’s Dedman College of Humanities and Sciences and recipient of a 2012 National Science Foundation CAREER Award of more than $1 million for her research toward detecting the particles that are believed to make up dark matter.

SMU honors high achievement during 2012 spring ceremonies

As the 2011-12 academic year draws to a close, SMU celebrates with two ceremonies honoring some of its most distinguished faculty, staff and students. This year’s Honors Day Convocation and Awards Extravaganza take place on the afternoon and evening of Monday, April 16, 2012.

Jodi Cooley, assistant professor of experimental particle physics in SMU’s Dedman College of Humanities and Sciences, will deliver the address during the 15th Honors Day Convocation at 5:30 p.m. in McFarlin Auditorium. The ceremony celebrates academic achievement at the University and department levels. Cooley, a member of the team collaborating on the Cryogenic Dark Matter Search (CDMS II) experiment, has received a 2012 National Science Foundation CAREER Award of more than $1 million for her research toward detecting the particles that are believed to make up dark matter.

2011 Honors Day Convocation moves to April 11

SMU’s 14th Annual Honors Day Convocation, originally scheduled for Monday, April 18, has been moved to Monday, April 11 at 5:30 p.m. in McFarlin Auditorium, according to an e-mail sent Thursday, Feb. 17 by University Registrar John Hall.

The date has been changed to reflect the 2011 Passover observance April 19-26. The holiday begins at sunset April 18.

Students being recognized at the Honors Day Convocation will be notified in late March. The entire University community is encouraged to attend the ceremony.

The ceremony celebrates academic achievement at the University and department levels. Retired and current faculty will assemble in academic dress no later than 5:10 p.m. in the Perkins Administration Building lobby and will process together to McFarlin Auditorium.
