Plan to get your free flu shot during SMU’s Fall 2017 clinics

Clinics will take place at various locations around the main campus, as well as the East Campus and SMU-in-Plano. All clinics are open to students and benefit-eligible faculty, staff, SMU retirees and retiree spouses.

Update your vaccination during the following days and times at these locations. If you can’t make it to a clinic, you can get a free inoculation at the Dr. Bob Smith Health Center on a walk-in basis.

SMU urges flu shots and other preventive measures

SMU health officials remind students, faculty and staff to take precautions against the flu and help prevent its spread by getting a flu shot.

Potentially severe flu season

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control, cases of influenza are expected to increase across the country. Because flu can spread by contact with people who are ill, it is recommended that if you did not get a flu shot last fall, you should do so at the SMU Health Center or at a local pharmacy, clinic or physician’s office.

National data indicate that this year’s vaccine may be somewhat less effective than in previous years, but getting vaccinated continues to offer the best protection against the flu, according to the CDC.

Where to obtain a flu shot

Flu shots are available at no cost to SMU faculty, staff and students, while supplies last, at the SMU Health Center, 3014 Daniel Avenue, 214-768-2141. No appointment is needed; bring your SMU ID to the Health Center.

In case of a health emergency, students should call 911.

The Health Center has resumed normal operating hours, with flu shots and other services available from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through Fridays.

Faculty, staff and students can update their inoculations from 1-2:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 8 through Friday, Jan. 10. The flu shots will be available 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Friday when the Health Center resumes regular hours on Monday, Jan. 13.

Health Center offers remaining Fall 2011 flu shots during clinic hours

Immunization hours are Tuesdays 1:30-3:30 p.m. and Wednesdays 9-11 a.m. and 1:30-3:30 p.m.

The University pays for flu shots for all benefit-eligible faculty and staff. Other faculty and staff members, as well as spouses, may purchase shots for $25. The Memorial Health Center accepts cash (exact change) and checks made out to the SMU Health Center.

Students who need a flu shot may pay $25 or charge their SMU account. Students who have SMU Aetna health insurance pay a $5 copay with Aetna paying $20.

Health Center offers additional Fall 2011 flu shot clinics

Stock photo of a man getting a flu shotSMU’s Memorial Health Center will offer several more Fall 2011 flu shot clinics during October. The next available clinic is for faculty, staff and students and will take place 2-4:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 14, in the Health Center building.

This year, the Health Center will offer both the new needle-free flu shot and the conventional needle shot.

Two more clinics for faculty, staff and students will take place at the Memorial Health Center, scheduled for 1:30-3 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 18, and 9-11 a.m. and 1:30-3:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 19.

Flu shots will also be available from 10:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 25 at the 2011 Human Resources Fair in the Hughes-Trigg Student Center.

A clinic for faculty, staff and students at the SMU-in-Plano campus will take place 4-6 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 26 in Building 3.
