Hawaiian Bible. Missionary Presses: A Bridwell Library Exhibition.

Missionary Presses: A Bridwell Library Exhibition: This exhibition highlights Bibles and other religious texts in indigenous languages published by missionary presses in the 19th century. Printed throughout the world in a variety of languages and letterforms, these translations were disseminated for local use as an integral element of conversion efforts by various denominations. The exhibition opens Friday, Aug. 29 in Bridwell Library.

Faculty Senate in session: The SMU Faculty Senate will hold its first meeting of the 2014-15 academic year 3-5 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 3 in the West Ballroom, Hughes-Trigg Student Center. Any member of the general faculty may attend.

  • General Faculty Meeting: 3:45 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 27
  • Labor Day: Monday, Sept. 1 (University offices closed)
  • First Faculty Senate Meeting of 2014-15: 3-5 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 3
  • Fall Break: Monday-Tuesday, Oct. 13-14
  • Family Weekend: Friday-Saturday, Oct. 24-25
  • Homecoming Weekend: Friday-Saturday, Nov. 14-15
  • Thanksgiving: Thursday-Friday, Nov. 27-28 (University offices closed)
  • Last day of classes: Monday, Dec. 8
  • Final exams: Thursday-Wednesday, Dec. 11-17 (no exams scheduled for Sunday)
  • December Commencement Convocation: Saturday, Dec. 20 (official close of term and date for conferral of degrees)
  • Christmas/Winter Break: Wednesday, Dec. 24, 2014-Thursday, Jan. 1, 2015 (University offices closed)

Faculty Senate honors five with 2014 Outstanding Staff Awards

SMU’s Faculty Senate honored five outstanding staff members with 2014 Faculty Senate Outstanding Staff Awards during its last meeting of the academic year on Wednesday, April 30.

In addition to the award, each honoree received a tote bag containing items ranging from gift certificates to performance passes to SMU Basketball T-shirts. The gifts were donated by SMU Athletics, the SMU Bookstore, SMU Dining Services, Meadows Museum and Meadows Theatre.

This year’s winners:

  • Sandra Blackstone, Finance, Cox School of Business
  • Amy Dahmann, Temerlin Advertising Institute, Meadows School of the Arts
  • Judy Gibbons, Intern Program, Perkins School of Theology
  • Cliff Gould, Parking Services, Parking and ID Card Services
  • Pam Henderson, Financial Aid and Scholarships, Meadows School of the Arts

Deadline for 2014 honorary degree nominations is Sept. 30

SMU’s Faculty Senate is seeking nominations for the honorary degree class of 2014. Nominees should be individuals “whose uncommon personal accomplishments at home or abroad have served society and the public good, or who enlarge human understanding and enrich human life, in any field of endeavor.” The deadline to nominate is Monday, Sept. 30.

Nominations should include:

  • a note identifying your membership in the SMU community
  • a 1-2 page statement detailing the nominee’s contributions
  • supporting biographical documentation
  • contact information for the nominee
