Three receive 2011 Distinguished University Citizen Awards

Three faculty members were honored with SMU’s 2011 Distinguished University Citizen Award at the Faculty Breakfast held May 14 before Commencement. This year’s recipients:

Patricia Alvey, Temerlin Advertising Institute, Meadows School of the Arts
Margaret Dunham, Computer Science and Engineering, Lyle School of Engineering
Dennis Foster, English, Dedman College of Humanities and Sciences

The award, given by the Provost’s Office, honors three faculty members each year for service and activities that benefit students and the University’s academic mission.

Faculty Senate presents 2009 Outstanding Staff Awards

The Faculty Senate chose 4 exemplary SMU staff members to receive 2009 Faculty Senate Outstanding Staff Awards. The honors were presented by outgoing President Dennis Foster at the Senate’s last meeting of the academic year on May 6.

This year’s recipients:

Jeanne Milazzo, Cox School of Business
Billie Stovall, Central University Libraries

Provost gives ‘cautiously optimistic’ budget outlook at faculty meeting

SMU Provost Paul Ludden presented a “cautiously optimistic” budget picture for the 2009-10 academic year at the 2009 Spring General Faculty Meeting Jan. 21. Faculty and staff pay increases will occur, he added. Assistant Professor Maria Dixon received a special award during the meeting. Read a recap under the link.

University celebrates December Graduation Dec. 13

December Graduation imageThe SMU community will celebrate the graduation of more than 900 students Dec. 13 in Moody Coliseum.

Ceremonies will begin at 7 p.m. with a student and faculty procession and are expected to last about two hours. Speakers will include the following:

  • President R. Gerald Turner
  • Carl Sewell (’66), chair of the SMU Board of Trustees
  • Darrell Lafitte (’54), former SMU All-America football player and a recipient of the 2008 Distinguished Alumni Award
  • Dennis Foster, Faculty Senate president and D.D. Frensley Professor of English
  • Student Body President Rob Hayden

“The spirit of community combined with our celebration of the individual makes SMU’s December Graduation Convocation a special time,” President Turner says.

Faculty members will assemble for procession no later than 6:30 p.m. in Classroom One of the Dedman Center for Lifetime Sports. Prior to the ceremony, a faculty reception will begin at 5:45 p.m. in Classroom One of the Dedman Center for Lifetime Sports. Faculty members may RSVP online for the reception and Processional.

Physician Robert Haley is 2008 Dedman College Distinguished Graduate

Robert W. Haley and relativesDr. Robert Ware Haley, whose research has helped improve hospital care and define the symptoms of Gulf War syndrome, was honored as the 2008 Dedman College Distinguished Graduate during the Dedman College Celebration May 7.

The ceremony also honored Anthropology Professor Caroline Brettell for her service as Dedman College interim dean from 2006 to 2008.

Dennis Foster, D.D. Frensley Professor of English, was named the Dedman Family Distinguished Professor. English and history major Jessica Erwin was honored as the Robert and Nancy Dedman Outstanding Senior Student.
