Sports: Mustangs take Tulane, Women’s Golf victorious

Matches at Moody: Volleyball will face Tulane at home at at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 12, 2012. If you’re a Facebook fan of SMU Volleyball, you can print a coupon for free admission to the match versus the Green Wave. On Sunday, Oct. 14, the Mustangs have another home match versus UTEP at 1 p.m. The Mustangs enter the weekend with sophomore Caroline Young being named Conference USA offensive player of the week, her second time receiving the honor this season, and senior Olivia Bailey being named Conference USA setter of the week.

NOLA Bound: SMU Football travels to New Orleans this weekend to take on Tulane, at 12 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 13. This will be the final game between SMU and Tulane as conference mates. Tulane has a 12-8 lead over SMU for match-ups, but SMU has won every meeting since 2009. The Mustangs enter the game with junior Randall Joyner being named Conference USA defensive player of the week.

On the right track: SMU Women’s Golf will be in Oklahoma for their next tournament, the Susie Maxwell Berning Tournament, Oct. 15-17. The Mustangs enter the tournament after placing first in the Johnie Imes Invitational, putting them at 2/3 wins for tournament play this season. In addition to her win at the Invitational, senior Melanie White was named Conference USA Co-Women’s golfer of the week. White finished the invitational at 8 under par, scoring a tournament record.

Soccer Sunday: On Sunday, Oct. 14, Men and Women’s Soccer will have matches on the road. The men face UCF in Florida at 6 p.m. and enter the game as the number one team for the Midwest region in NSCAA national rankings. The women match up against Marshall in West Virgina at noon.

Sports: The Battle for the Iron Skillet, Women’s soccer at home

Equestrian starts strong: The SMU women’s equestrian 2012 season is in full swing. The Mustangs were victorious in their season opener against Delaware State on Thursday, Sept. 20 with a final raw score of 785-768. Sophomore, Emma Roberts, earned MVP honors in the meet. This weekend they are traveling to Kansas for meets against Kansas State on Friday, Sept. 28 at 3 p.m. and against Tennessee-Martin on Saturday, Sept. 29, 2012 at 9 a.m.

Soccer looking for wins: SMU women’s soccer has two games this weekend and is hoping for two at home wins. They will face UTEP on Friday, Sept. 28, at 7 p.m. and Colorado College on Sunday, Sept. 30, at 2 p.m. The Mustangs are currently 0-1-1 in Conference USA after tying against Houston and losing to Rice last weekend. When talking about the upcoming weekend Coach Petrucelli said, “It’s go time for us as we need points to stay in the race. I’m confident in our team’s ability to play and believe success isn’t that far away.”

DFW Duel: The long standing Battle for the Iron Skillet will continue this Saturday, Sept. 29, 2012 when SMU takes on TCU at Ford Stadium. Kick off is at 6 p.m. and the game will be broadcasted live on Fox Sports. The Mustangs enter the game 1-2 overall and 0-0 in Conference USA. The Horned Frogs enter 3-0 overall and 1-0 in the Big 12. SMU is currently in possession of the Iron Skillet after defeating TCU in Fort Worth last season with an overtime final score of 40-33.

Who’s at home next week: Women’s swimming will kick-off their season with an intra-squad meet. On Tuesday, Oct. 2, 2012 the Red and Blue Intra Squad Meet will be in Perkins Natatorium at 6 p.m. Men’s soccer will be at home on Wednesday, Oct. 3, 2012. They will face Tulsa at 7 p.m. after traveling to Alabama to face UAB on Saturday, Sept. 29, 2012.
