Finding a match: Students, employers mingle at Career Fair Feb. 14

This Valentine’s Day, SMU’s Hegi Family Career Development Center will play matchmaker for students and businesses looking for commitments.

More than 100 employers will participate in the Hegi Career Center’s Spring 2013 Career and Internship Fair noon-4 p.m Thursday, Feb. 14, in Hughes-Trigg Student Center. Students can find a list of participating employers here.

Hegi Career Center counselors are available to help students make the most of their Career Fair experience. A few advance tips:

“As part of your research before the fair, check out your target employers on Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter. Social media may provide you more information about the company culture and what it is like to work there.” – Guy Davis

“Dress in business casual clothing for the fair. Make eye contact and have a firm handshake when meeting employers for the first time. These are simple yet powerful ways to be remembered.” – Darin Ford

“After the fair, if you met with a company that has a strong presence on Twitter or Facebook, tweet or post on its page about how great it was to learn about the company and its opportunities, and mention something specific that you discussed. The company’s social media team will be impressed and might even tweet back!” – Allison Dupuis

“After the fair, make sure you follow up with employer representatives who provided you their contact information. Thank-you notes are always appreciated. Also, check the career center website to see whether the company will be hosting an information session that you can attend.” – Lisa Tran

Hegi Career Center offers tips for Fall 2012 Career and Internship Fair

More than 100 employers are participating in SMU’s Fall 2012 Career and Internship Fair. Janet Lewis, assistant director of the Hegi Family Career Development Center, advises students to make a plan before the fair about the employer representatives they’d like to visit so they can use their time efficiently.

“Do some research and find at least one thing that interests you,” Lewis says. “You can use that in your conversation with the representative. Employers are impressed by students who take the time to learn a little about their company.”

The fall fair takes place noon-4 p.m Thursday, Sept. 20, at Hughes-Trigg Student Center. Students can find a list of participating employers here.

Hegi Career Center counselors also offered these tips:

“As part of your research before the fair, check out your target employers on Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter. Social media may provide you more information about the company culture and what it is like to work there.” – Guy Davis

“Dress in business casual clothing for the fair. Make eye contact and have a firm handshake when meeting employers for the first time.  These are simple yet powerful ways to be remembered.” – Darin Ford

Spring 2011 Career & Internship Fair: What students should know

Lockheed Martin representatives talk with SMU students at a past Career FairIt’s that time of the semester again- despite the early term’s inclement weather (and the cancellation of C & I Prep Day), the Career & Internship Fair returns to SMU Feb. 16, 2011. Here’s what your students should know before trying their luck with some of the top employers in the nation:

The Fair will, as always, be in the Hughes-Trigg Student Center Ballroom. This semester’s installment takes place from noon to 4 p.m. The Fair is open to all majors within SMU, and no RSVP is required.

As the cancelled Prep Day’s events would have already stated, students should bring their IDs and multiple copies of their résumés, and professional attire is strongly recommended.

More than 80 employers will have representatives at the Career & Internship Fair. Included in the ever-updating companies list are household names such as:

  • AT&T
  • Citi
  • Frito Lay
  • Lockheed Martin (pictured right)
  • Neiman Marcus
  • PricewaterhouseCoopers
  • Southwest Airlines

Lunch will be served from 11 to noon. For more information, visit the Hegi Family Career Development Center’s website or Facebook page.

The list of attending employers is subject to be updated in the days leading up to the Fair. To contact the Hegi Center, call 214-768-2266.
