Hot Links: Equestrian team competes for national title

SMU equestrian team member Kristen CollinsThe equestrian team competes in the 2009 Varsity Equestrian National Championships against No. 6 seed Oklahoma State April 16 at the Heart of Texas Fair Complex in Waco. The Mustangs earned the No. 11 seed in the Hunt Seat division, which begins with fences at 9 a.m. followed by equitation on the flat at 1:30 p.m. Junior Kristen Collins (right) will lead the Mustangs as the only rider in the lineup to compete in both fences and equitation. Sophomore Darren Walsh (below left) has been named to the 2009 Conference USA All-Academic men’s tennis team for excellence in the classroom and on the court. A computer science major with a 3.93 G.P.A. in SMU’s Lyle School of Engineering, Walsh also was named to the C-USA Commissioner’s Honor Roll and achieved an ITA doubles ranking of No. 33 with fellow sophomore Adham el-Effendi, posting a 15-4 overall record. Meanwhile, senior Natalia Bubien has been named to the 2009 Conference USA All-Academic women’s tennis team. Bubien, who has a 3.86 G.P.A. and is ranked 1st in C-USA at No. 1 singles, is a psychology major with a minor in biological sciences in SMU’s Dedman College. A 4-time C-USA Commissioner’s Academic Medal and Honor Roll winner, Bubien was the 2007 Scholar Athlete of the Year. This her 3rd consecutive All-Academic Team honor. Read more.

SMU tennis player Darren WalshSophomore Kelly Kraft was named the Conference USA Golfer of the Week on April 15, 2009, based on his performance at the UMB Bank/Tiger Intercollegiate. Kraft shot an 8-under-par 208 (68-69-71) to medal at The Club at Old Hawthorne in Columbia, Missouri, on April 14. This is Kraft’s 5th career weekly honor and 3rd of the 2008-09 season. Read more.

Punter/kicker Mike Loftus and cornerback J.R. McConico, both incoming first-year football players, have been selected to play for USA Football’s 2009 Junior National Team, which will compete in the sport’s first junior world championship this summer. The 8-nation, 4-continent 2009 International Federation of American Football (IFAF) Junior World Championship will take place June 27-July 5 in Canton, Ohio. Read more.

SMU Football Coach June JonesHead Football Coach June Jones (right) announced the signing of 25 student-athletes to National Letters of Intent Feb. 4, 2009. This year’s class has eight members identified as three- or four-star recruits by – equaling the number of such recruits in the 2007 and 2008 classes combined.

“Obviously, having a full year to focus on recruiting helped us put together what I believe is a very strong class,” Jones said. “SMU has become a very attractive option for standouts from Texas and across the nation. We’re building for bowl games and conference championships, and this class is another big step in that direction.” Read more.

The women’s basketball team, which has won 6 straight games and 12 of its last 14, faces Conference USA co-leader Southern Miss in a game beginning at 7 p.m. CT Feb. 5, 2009. The showdown can be seen live nationally on CBS College Sports and heard on KAAM (770 AM). Read more.

The men’s tennis team achieved a 1-1 record in the National Indoor Championships at the Los Angeles Tennis Center Jan. 31, 2009. Sophomores Darren Walsh and Adham el-Effendi won in straight sets in singles matches against Fresno State, while first-year player David Costa won in three sets against his singles opponent.
