Staying strong: SMU women’s basketball has an away game Thursday, Feb. 14, 2013 against East Carolina. The Mustangs are currently unbeaten in Conference USA and enter tonight’s game with a 10-game winning streak. Keena Mays was also awarded C-USA Player of the Week for the fourth time this season. Mays is a junior transfer from Kansas and has the top scoring offense for the league, averaging 20.6 points a game. The Mustangs also received votes in the Associated Press and USA Today Sports Coaches’ Top 25 Polls for the second straight week. The women play Memphis at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 17 before returning to Moody Coliseum on Feb. 21. Tonight’s tip off is scheduled for 6 p.m.
Equestrian program expands: SMU equestrian will start their spring season this weekend at BuckBranch Farm. The women compete against LSU Friday, Feb. 15 and against Baylor Saturday, Feb. 16. SMU Equestrian is currently English-only but is adding a Western team for the 2013-14 season. The Western discipline consists of horsemanship and reining; with this new discipline, SMU will be eligible to compete for the overall NCEA title. Both days of this weekend’s competition begin at 10 a.m.
Men’s basketball in NOLA: SMU men’s basketball made a comeback against Rice last Saturday, Feb. 9, winning 61-39. The men are away again this Saturday, Feb. 16 versus Tulane; tipoff is at 1:30 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on FSN. The men are currently 13-12 for the season and 3-7 for Conference USA with only six games left until Conference USA Championship play in Tulsa, OK.
