Sports: Soccer to semi-finals, Cross Country to NCAA regionals

C-USA Championship: SMU men’s soccer will travel to Hoover, Alabama this weekend for Conference USA 2012 championship play.  On Friday, Nov. 9, the Mustangs will take on Kentucky in the semi-final game. SMU is 7-4 all-time in games against Kentucky, and if they win they will play in the C-USA championship game this Sunday, Nov. 11, 2012.

The Mustangs closed out the season with various honors. Head coach Tim McClements was named coach of the year, junior, Jamie Ibarra was named player of the year and defensive player of the year, senior T.J. Nelson and sophomores Tyler Engel, Damian Rosales and Aaron Simmons were named to the All-Conference USA second team. IN addition, Michael King and John Lujano were named to the C-USA all-freshman team. Friday’s game starts at 5 p.m. and Sunday’s starts at 1 p.m. (Pictured left, Jamie Ibarra.)

End of season: SMU volleyball will have their final weekend of 2012 Conference USA matches in a back-to-back home stand Nov. 9-11. On Friday, the Mustangs face Houston at 7 p.m.; on Sunday, they will play Rice at 1 p.m. Sunday’s game is Senior Day, and there will be a ceremony before the game to honor the squad’s three seniors: Olivia Bailey, Susan Lewis and Courtney Manning. The last time SMU was matched against Houston and Rice they were defeated, but they are looking for comebacks this weekend to finish the conference season strong.

NCAA meets: SMU cross country will travel to Fayetteville, Arkansas Friday, Nov. 9 for the 2012 NCAA South Central Regional Championships. The Mustangs won their fourth Conference USA title this season; Cathy Casey received coach of the year honors, and first-year Ashlee Powers and senior Mary Alenbratt received first-team All C-USA honors. In addition, freshmen Karoline Skatteboe and Shenoah Souze and junior Caitlin Keen received second team All-C-USA honors. SMU has eight runners going to regionals Friday, five of whom are first-years, and they enter the weekend ranked No. 3 in the region. If they finish first or second, they are guaranteed a spot at nationals on Nov. 17. (Pictured right, Mary Alenbratt.)

Golden Eagles: SMU football will take on Southern Miss at home this Saturday, Nov. 10. This is the Mustangs second to last home game (and last Boulevard) of the season. Southern Miss, the reigning C-USA champion, is 0-5 in C-USA this year while SMU is 3-2 in conference play. The Mustangs enter the game after being defeated by UCF last Saturday, and they are looking for their fourth straight bowl berth. The game starts at 6 p.m., and FOX Sports will broadcast it live.

The week ahead: SMU men and women’s swimming and diving travel to Houston for the 2012 Cougar Invitational, Nov. 15-17.
