Sports: Tennis season begins, soccer starts conference play

Tennis to travel: The 2012-13 tennis season kicks off this weekend for the men’s and women’s teams. The women travel to Austin for the Texas Invitational Sept. 21-23. The men have three players traveling to New York for the NTC Invitational Sept. 21-23 and four players traveling to Tyler, TX for the Tyler Invitational Sept. 22-23.

Volleyball home matches: This weekend, Volleyball will play home matches on Friday and Sunday. The Mustangs take on East Carolina at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 21. They are 5-4 all-time against ECU and have been victorious in the last four matches. At 1 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 23 they will play Marshall. All matches will be held in Moody Coliseum.

Conference opener: The women’s soccer team kicks off its Conference USA schedule against Houston at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 21. The Mustangs are 10-1-1 all-time against Houston, including a 1-0 win over the Cougars at their last match up in October 2011. They will stay in Houston for the weekend and face Rice at 1 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 23.

Men take on South Carolina: Men’s soccer also has its first Conference-USA game coming up: SMU will play South Carolina at home at 7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 24. The Mustangs enter the game after a tie against CSU on Thursday, Sept. 20 and winning both of their games in the SMU Classic the weekend of Sept. 14. Goalkeeper Jaime Ibarra was named tournament MVP.
