Sports: Women’s golf victorious, football faces Aggies Sept. 15

Women’s golf victorious: SMU women’s golf traveled to Nebraska Sept. 10-11, 2012, for the Chip-N Club Invite and came home with the title for the second year in a row. First-year Alexandra Rossi shot three over par and earned individual medalist honors in her first career collegiate match. (Right, Rossi courtesy of SMU Athletics.)

“Wear red, be early, and be loud”: SMU will face Texas A&M in the second home game of the season at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 15, 2012. SMU and A&M have met 78 times – the last on Sept. 4, 2011, when the Aggies defeated the Mustangs 46-14. Overall, the Aggies have a 42-29-7 edge, but this can change come Saturday. Look out for:

  • Margus Hunt: Hunt is a senior defensive end that first started playing in 2009. Since then he has broken the NCAA career record when he blocked his ninth career FGA in the 2012 SMU vs. SFA game. Hunt is currently on the Watch Lists for both Hendricks and Lombardi Awards, was named preseason All-Conference USA by several outlets and was named the No. 1 athletic “freak” in college football by CBSSports.com.
  • Kenneth Acker: Acker is a junior defensive back who this week was named Conference USA Defensive Player of the Week.
  • Zach Line: Line set a school record by rushing for five TDs in the 2011 Northwestern State game. Line’s 36 career rushing TDs are third all-time at SMU. This year Line is joined by his brother, PARADE Magazine All-American Prescott Line.
  • Darius Johnson: Senior wide receiver Johnson was named MVP in back-to-back bowl games, the Armed Forces Bowl (2010) and BBVA Compass Bowl (2012).
