Sophomore Therese Svendsen (right) was named the 2010 Conference USA Swimmer of the Year on April 16 following her 13th-place finish in the 100-yard backstroke at the NCAA Championships held last month in Indianapolis, Indiana. At the C-USA Championships in Houston in February, Svendsen posted an NCAA “A” qualifying time of 52.65 seconds with her 1st-place finish in the 100 back. She also won the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 1:54.98, helping the Mustangs to their 5th consecutive conference title. Svendsen was named C-USA Freshman of the Year in 2009. Read more.
The No. 27 women’s tennis team is the top seed in the 2010 Conference USA Championship running April 22-25 in Tulsa. The defending champion Mustangs (22-3) received a bye for the 1st round and will face the winner of the April 22 match between No. 8 seed Southern Miss and No. 9 seed Memphis on April 23. The team enters the championship with three ITA-ranked singles players. Sophomore Marta Lesniak is 28-5 and ranked No. 29, sophomore Aleksandra Malyarchikova is ranked No. 114 with 24-5, and first-year player Edyta Cieplucha ranks No. 116 with a 16-1 record. Read more.
Sophomore Matt Schovee (left) has been named to the 2010 Conference USA Men’s Golf All-Academic Team, announced April 22. The team is chosen by C-USA men’s golf media relations directors and consists of students who have earned a 3.20 cumulative grade point average or better and are a regular participant on their team. Schovee, who plans to major in business, ranks 2nd on the squad with a 73.53 stroke average and carries a 3.67 G.P.A. He placed 5th at the National Invitational Tournament with a 215 and helped SMU to the team title at the Adams Cup with a 4th-place finish.
