Art for a cause showcased in Art for Darfur Preview Night

Art for Darfur 2010 logoA performance by the Dallas Black Dance Theatre and artwork from the Dallas Independent School District’s Charles Rice and L.L. Hotchkiss elementary schools are among the highlights of the 2010 Art for Darfur Preview Night. The free event takes place 7-9 p.m. March 20 in SMU’s Hughes-Trigg Student Center.

The show will give visitors an advance look at art to be sold at a silent auction scheduled for April 17. Proceeds from Art for Darfur sales will benefit the Darfur Peace & Development Organization (IRC).

Art for Darfur was launched by SMU students in 2007 as a one-night silent auction to benefit the Genocide Intervention Network‘s civilian protection program in Darfur, Sudan. Since then, the organization has grown to include students, artists, activists, faith communities, educational institutions and nonprofit organizations “who recognize the power of art to raise funds and awareness for the crisis in Darfur, Sudan,” according to its website.

This year’s event is presented in collaboration with Texans Against Genocide. For more information, contact Tiana Lightfoot Svendsen (’07), 214-768-3308.
