Each Spring, members of the SMU community are invited to nominate students (as well as faculty and staff for the "M" Award - see below) deserving of recognition for the awards noted below. The award recipients are announced at the Hilltop Excellence Awards, held annually on the third Monday of April, and coinciding with the Honors Day Convocation. SMU celebrates 2017 December Commencement Convocation Saturday, Dec. 16

SMU Forum Originally Posted: December 7, 2017 The SMU community will celebrate 2017 December Commencement Convocation on Saturday, Dec. 16. Kenneth A. Hersh, president and CEO of the George W. Bush Presidential Center, will give the address. Ceremonies will begin at 10 a.m. in Moody Coliseum with a student and faculty procession. Doors to the staging area in Dedman Center for Lifetime Sports will open at 8:30 a.m. Processional groups begin forming at 9:15 a.m.; doors close at 9:40 a.m. The faculty should assemble in academic dress no later than 9:40 a.m. in the Champions Club. On Friday, Dec. 15, undergraduate candidates will participate in Rotunda Recessional. Candidates should wear SMU regalia and begin lining up at 5:15 p.m. at the flagpole on the Main Quad. Dedman College Student Has Heart for Kids Battling Heart Defects

NBC 5 Originally Posted: November 25, 2017 Jeffrey Kelley is a healthy SMU English and sociology major. He plays symbols in the SMU Mustang band. But, he was born with a congenital heart defect and had his first surgery at six weeks old. He was homeschooled and had limited physical activity until he had another surgery at age 16. Jeffrey’s dad sent three e-mails to friends suggesting they send cards to his son after his surgery. To Jeffrey’s surprise, and embarrassment, he received more than 1,000 cards. Six Myths About Choosing a College Major

New York Times Originally Posted: November 3, 2017 Many colleges ask you to choose a major as early as your senior year of high school, on your admissions application. Yet there’s a good chance you’ll change your mind. The Education Department says that about 30 percent of students switch majors at least once. Students get plenty of advice about picking a major. It turns out, though, that most of it is from family and friends, according to aSeptember Gallup survey. Only 11 percent had sought guidance from a high school counselor, and 28 percent from a college adviser. And most didn’t think that the advice was especially helpful.
