Engineering Careers Book Review

I’m updating our collection of engineering career management titles and highlighting a book your students might find valuable:

Ready for Takeoff! A Winning Process for Launching Your Engineering Career
Dean C. Millar, Assistant Dean at University of Buffalo – SUNY
This book is aimed at undergraduates starting to plan their careers. It has the expected chapters on resume writing, researching potential employers, and interviewing.  There are chapters on personal and professional skills like teamwork, communication, motivation and self-reliance, which often determine job success and advancement these days. I think the chapters on opportunities within each discipline like project management, quality engineering and entrepreneurship are what make this book a stand-out.  Most chapters include additional words of advice from successful engineers. Mr. Millar began and manages the Engineering Career Institute at Buffalo over the past 18 years, helping over 2000 students launch careers. I recommend this book to most any student needing to look down the road at the possibilities.
