During this monumental Year of the Library, Gillian M. McCombs, dean and director of the Central University Libraries, has been invited to give the 2013 convocation speech on Sunday, August 25.

Opening Convocation is a tradition at SMU that is not to be missed! All new first-year and transfer students are invited and encouraged to attend the 99th Annual Opening Convocation. At the event, students will be formally welcomed to the SMU community in a ceremony dating back to 1915, in the very first days of the University. Highlights of the ceremony include the faculty in full academic regalia and Wes Waggoner, Dean of Undergraduate Admission, formally presenting the new class of students to the President, SMU administrators and professors. As the convocation speaker, Dean McCombs will offer encouraging words to set students on their new course of academic discovery in her speech entitled “In a minute there is time …”* *T.S. Eliot, The Lovesong of J. Alfred Prufrock

Guests are welcome at the event and we hope you will make plans to be there to show your support of Dean McCombs and CUL. For more information, visit http://www.smu.edu/EnrollmentServices/Registrar/AcademicCeremonies/OpeningConvocation.
