Professor Amy S. Greenberg, Edwin Erle Sparks Professor of History and Women’s Studies at Penn State University, will be presenting “Mr. and Mrs. Polk’s War: A Presidential Partnership for Texas and Manifest Destiny.”

The U.S.-Mexican War was known at the time as “Mr. Polk’s War.” But given the central political role First Lady Sarah Childress Polk played during her husband’s presidency, a better title would have been “Mr. and Mrs. Polk’s War.” This talk will explore how the Polks formed the first “Presidential partnership,” and the impact of Sarah Polk on the policies and implementation of America’s 1846 war for empire.
