In this issue of Campaign Update we are very pleased to report that The Second Century Campaign has exceeded $714 million in total commitments, comprising 95 percent of our $750 million goal. You also will read that we are on the way to achieving our campaign goals for yearly giving participation and alumni giving participation.
This success is due to remarkable examples of donor support, such as the recent gift from Annette and Harold Simmons, as well as an outpouring of donations from alumni, parents and friends who have provided gifts of all sizes.
Yet, while achieving campaign goals is important, it is the campaign’s effect on the University that counts most: Notable achievements include SMU’s new academic programs, its rising reputation and the increased global impact of faculty and students.
Given this success, it is crucial to continue the campaign at full speed through the centennial decade, ending in December 2015. This spring our volunteer leaders are reassessing the campaign’s remaining goals and objectives. We also are recruiting additional volunteers and articulating key initiatives that will positively impact SMU and engage potential supporters.
And what a perfect time it is to be demonstrating this tremendous momentum and these remarkable results! Soon SMU will be the focus of the world’s attention as the George W. Bush Presidential Center is dedicated. World leaders and thousands of guests will gather on campus for this historic event – and SMU will be introduced to literally millions of individuals around the globe.
An international audience will learn of SMU’s achievements, the quality of our students and faculty and our vision for a second century of achievement. We are ready to tell our story to the world.
SMU’s extraordinary progress is the result of your support and commitment, along with that of tens of thousands of other alumni and friends. As stewards of your University, we deeply appreciate the many opportunities you are providing to students and faculty as they seek achievement in the classroom, laboratory, library, arts venue and athletic field.
This is a great time to be a Mustang. Join us, stay involved and take great satisfaction in the amazing impact of your work and generosity.
Thank you for your efforts, which have taken us this far. And thank you for your future support as we continue to build SMU’s second century.
