Total Giving Up 128% Since 2006

DALLAS (SMU) – For the fourth straight year, SMU Athletics has set fundraising records for gifts received during a fiscal year. This year, SMU scored the “triple crown”, setting records in all three categories – Total Athletics Giving, Athletics Annual Giving and Mustang Club Giving.

Including capital and other gifts, nearly $20 million was given to SMU Athletics in fiscal year 2012, which ended May 31. Since 2006, total athletics giving has more than doubled, despite a challenging economic environment.

A record total of $8.3 million was received in annual gifts – an increase of 171% over the past six years – a number which includes a Mustang Club annual giving best of $2.6 million.

“Our record numbers for support were a team effort,” said interim Director of Athletics Tim Leonard. “Our donors rose to the occasion with the BIG EAST Challenge, our growing alumni base achieved record levels of National Mustang Club support, and our new structure of volunteer involvement had a big impact. I can’t thank our staff, volunteers and donors enough.”

Another large portion of the 2012 contributions came in the form of gifts for capital projects, including those to support enhancements to football facilities, renovation and expansion of Moody Coliseum and construction of a new 12-court tennis complex. These projects will provide many new and improved features to enhance the facilities for student-athletes and the experience for Mustang fans. Additional gifts are still needed to complete funding for Athletics capital projects.

“Gifts of any amount to SMU Athletics are always appreciated. I want to give special thanks to those groups and individuals who stepped forward this year with large capital gifts,” said Leonard. “Their contributions obviously were a big part of our record fundraising totals.”
