Beyond the Mission: Exploring the Truths

Esmeralda Ortiz, The Budd Center, Annette Caldwell Simmons School of Education and Human Development

Esmeralda Ortiz, Director of Human Development, shared our story with a national audience at the 2018 Collective Impact Convening on April 4th. Esmeralda discussed the evolution of The School Zone model, challenges we faced along the way and what we’ve learned so far about collective impact leadership.

Funders, backbones, partners and community members from around the country attended. By sharing what has and has not worked and how our partners and The Budd Center grew together through our 10-year partnership, Esmeralda sought to open dialogue to help those who are beginning their collective impact journey.

3 collective impact lessons from Esmeralda’s presentation:

  • Relationship building is the first step. Nurturing these relationships keeps us successful.
  • We must keep CEOs/nonprofit leaders involved and bought into the vision.
  • It’s not enough to provide data. You must train partners on how to best use it.
