The treatment (Prolonged Exposure Therapy) is an empirically supported treatment that has been proven effective across multiple types traumas including physical assault, sexual assault, combat/war zone, and motor vehicle accidents. In their review of PTSD treatments, the Institute of Medicine stated, “the evidence is sufficient to conclude the efficacy of exposure therapies in the treatment of PTSD” (p. S6). Similarly, this treatment received an award from SAMSHA as a model treatment to be targeted for dissemination. This treatment is currently being rolled out in VA hospitals throughout the US and Canada.
